Pain located on at the elbow, either inner or outer side, can come about from repetitive stress and strain put on the tendons that attach here. They are tendons that belong to the gripping muscles and those that perform typing, opening or turning motions of the wrist and hand.
After a periods of prolonged overuse the tendons can become painful, swollen and change structure, a condition called tendinopathy. It can make everyday life difficult, such as shopping and getting dressed and in it’s worst cases can last for months or years and require injections or surgery.
Physical therapy is effective at managing this condition and recovering the tendon back to normal through the application of manual therapy, stretches, splinting, ice and exercise therapy. Other modalities such as acupuncture may also help.
